Toyota, I’m going to keep this short and sweet. The Tundra is still a decent truck. It still gets the job done, but here is the issue – just getting the job done is not enough in this market.
Toyota dropped off a 2020 Tundra Limited off for the week, and to be honest, I was excited. I’m a big fan of my dad’s 2014 Tundra and I had a ton of fun with the 2019 Tundra TRD. I thought the addition of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless key (half a decade late) could take the Tundra to that next step.
Well, I was wrong.
The basics of this truck go back to 2007. That’s when the 5.7L V8 was released with what is basically the same chassis underneath. While a major update was done in 2014, it’s largely the same truck today as it was then, and it shows. The only category the current Tundra competes well and is payload and amazing color availability. The ride is not nearly as nice as its rivals, it’s much less efficient, and the interior is quite dated.
This has all happened while the Tundra remains one of the most expensive trucks relative to its competitors. It has gotten to the point that my dad and I have joked that we could take the headlights off of one of the press vehicles and throw them on my dad’s nearly 7-year-old truck and he would have a brand new vehicle, and funny enough we could actually do it because it has changed so little.
Really It’s kind of a shame Toyota let it get to this point. The Tundra was a really cool truck when it came out but now it’s just time to get a move on. Toyota, bring us an all new Tundra, we deserve it.
