I recently had the keys to a brand new 2022 Lexus GX 460 in the Luxury trim and I wanted to do as I normally do – get right to the point on just what is special about this vehicle and what might make you want to pass on it. So on we go with the best and worst features of the 2022 Lexus GX 460 Luxury…..
BEST: Upgraded Infotainment
The 2022 Lexus GX 460 gets quite a bigger screen than in prior years. 10-inch navigation screen replaces the 8-inch screen of old. While the touchpad is still there (I will “touch” on that later) the navigation screen is a touch screen allowing you to completely ignore the touchpad. Along with being touch screen, the infotainment has been brought up to the current times and includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and what should be a given built-in navigation.
BEST: The 2022 Lexus GX 460 is Basically a Luxury V8 4Runner
Being new to the 4Runner family, I can clearly see the comparison and link across the brands. 4Runner, Land Cruiser Prado, whatever the closest the vehicle matches up in your neck of the words it is basically a V8 4Runner.
Want more rugged? Then 4Runner is more your style, but the GX 460 has always been there for those who needed more luxury and of course a V8 under the hood. For Star Wars fans, this is much like a Lightsaber versus a blaster. The 2022 GX 460 is a much more civilized weapon.
BEST: 2022 Lexus GX 460 Has Off-Road Cred
The GX model line of Lexus has historically proven itself to be one heck of an overlander. I personally am waiting for my wife’s uncle to want to offload his first-generation GX 470 just so I can turn it into an overlander/off-road toy.
The 2022 GX 460 comes with a four-wheel-drive standard, multi-terrain select, and its V8-power engine will surely help you push through the terrain.
I will be the first one to tell you that the current generation GX 460 definitely has a bit more bumper overhang just waiting to be ripped off or destroyed, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t more than capable of climbing a mountain as it leaves pieces of its bumper behind.
BEST: Unique Side-Hinge Rear Door
This one might find you on the other side of the fence. There are those which I completely agree with, which will say the side-hinge rear door limits functionality (as you will have to park farther away), but I simply like that it is different. Everyone has rear hatches that go up, daring to do something different and owning it should be called out as a good thing.
BEST: Quality Interior
I touched on the upgraded infotainment, but really the whole interior is a great part of the GX 460. There is some hard plastic here or there, but quality materials overcome that and give you a real sense you are in something both special and expensive.
WORST: Touchpad
I mentioned I would get to the touchpad, and here I am. I really hate touchpads in a moving vehicle. Luckily the screen in the 2022 Lexus GX 460 is a touchscreen, so you can ignore using it like I did, but then at that point, it is a worthless waste of space.
WORST: 2022 Lexus GX 460 Fuel Economy – the V8 is Thirsty
The 2022 Lexus GX 460 has an estimated EPA fuel economy of 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. There isn’t much to say about it other than it isn’t that great.
