The First VTEC Turbo Honda In The United States Is Not The Civic Type R

Can you take a guess at what it is?

Honda fanboys are in a stir because the 2017 Honda Civic Type R is here (except Doug Demuro, but he doesn’t count).  The new Type R now has a big turbo forcing air into the small 2.0-liter engine.  Most people think this is the first time Honda has turbocharged one of their VTEC engines in the US.  WELL, YOU ARE WRONG.   The 2007 Acura RDX was the first VTEC turbocharged engine from Honda in the United States.  A luxury compact SUV that has been long since forgotten but RFD is here to educated you.

I bet you forgot about the Acura RDX!

The 2007 Acura RDX is a compact SUV that debuted at the 2006 New York Autoshow.  Luxury compact SUVs had just become cool and Acura wanted in on the fun.   From the factory, it came with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder VTEC (K23A1) engine that was turbocharged with a top mounted intercooler.  In 2007 this engine produced 240-hp and  260-lb-ft of torque and it could hit 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.  That is better than some compact sports cars for sale TODAY.

The 2007 Acura RDX is quite a good car on the used car market.  For around $5,000 and you get a super handling all-wheel-drive, turbocharged compact SUV that can haul ass and handle well.  And you thought the new Civic Type R was great?
