The last Volkswagen I was behind the wheel of was a Golf R, so I am keen to check out what one of the lesser performance Golf GTI trims still bring to the table. After spending a week with the 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 2.0T Autobahn I got the vibe that it is the right combination of performance and useability. Here are the PROs and CONs of the 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 2.0T Autobahn:
PRO: Handles Amazingly
Handles on rails is such a played out phrase in the automotive community, so I won’t use it. I will simply say the Golf GTI handles quite good. Cruising around town was such an ease and the back country roads were quite fun!
PRO: Interior Quality
The Golf GTI has some hard plastics sprinkled about, but they are used in such a way that the little hatchback screams quality. It all feels simple, but special.
PRO: Interior Space
If you didn’t know, with a Golf GTI you are getting hatchback size, but in the driver seat you would never know. You don’t feel squished or tight in anyway. You will only notice it is a smaller hatchback when you turn back at it at the grocery store parking lot.
PRO: Good Combo of Performance/Efficiency
The 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 2.0T Autobahn comes packed with a 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque engine accessible from a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. It can propel you to 60 miles an hour in 6 seconds flat all while allowing for over 33 miles per gallon highway. It is all a great combination of performance and fuel efficiency.
CON: Too Many Touch Controls
While I praise the Golf GTIs digital screens, there is way too much touch going on in the interior. I don’t want to touch a touch sensitive button to then touch my climate controls which are also touch sensitive buttons.
CON: No All-wheel-drive
Knowing there is the king Golf R above you will make you want what you can’t have. I’ve tested a Golf R and I can tell you that is the one I want.
