Chassis

The E9x generation M3 could be had in coupe (E92), convertible (E93), or sedan (E90). These models were all larger in dimension than the outgoing E46 chassis and the E92 M3 was the heaviest M3 coupe to date. The E92 M3 now tipped the scales at over 3,500 lbs with no options. Opt for the dual clutch transmission, sunroof, navigation, and 19″ wheels and don’t be shocked to see the scale readout of 3,700. For the curious, the convertible is near 4,000 lbs and the sedan isn’t much better.

But we’re talking about the E92 coupe, here. It’s the first time a carbon fiber roof was featured on a mass production car since the limited production E46 M3 CSL. In fact, the carbon fiber roof came standard on all E92 M3’s. If you wanted a sunroof, you could have one, but then you’d get a body color matched aluminum roof instead. The aluminum roof with sunroof and all hardware adds nearly 40 lbs to the top most part of the car. Not at all what we’d want in a sports car.

Is it just a 3-Series Chassis?
Yes, the E92 M3 shares the same chassis, doors and trunk with the 328i and 335i coupes. Same dimensions. Same wheelbase. Similarities end there. All other body panels, such as the carbon fiber roof, bumpers, hood, fenders, engine, suspension, and other components are M3 specific. See the graphics below. All parts in blue are uniquely M3.

The E92 M3’s chassis also received unique reinforcement and braces, shown in red in the graphic below.

In fact, the only carry-over part from the non-M 3-series was a trailing arm. See scan of the E92 M3 Brochure below.
